The same Bible can be letter, or it can be spirit to us
If we read the Bible merely as doctrines and facts, we make it a book of letters. Since the Bible is the word of God, and the Lord said that His words are Spirit, if we contact the Bible with our spirit, it becomes spirit, and we eat it. The same Bible can be letter, or it can be spirit to us. Whether it is letter or spirit depends on how we read it. If we read it merely with our mind, it is letter, but if we contact it with our spirit, it is spirit.

Enjoying Christ in Our Spirit
[The] three stages—Egypt, the wilderness, and the good land—correspond to the three parts of our entire being. Our body corresponds to Egypt; our soul corresponds to the wilderness; and our spirit, with Christ in it, corresponds to the good land. Before we were saved, we were in Egypt. Once we were saved, we began to wander in the wilderness of the soul. If we will forget about our soul and take care of our spirit, we will enjoy Christ in our spirit as the good land. There we will enjoy Christ as our rest. As we enjoy Him in our spirit, this enjoyment will become the kingdom.

Presenting the Church to Himself
It is such a glorious church that Christ will present to Himself at His coming back. Eventually, the church presented to Christ will be a God-expressing one. Such a church will also be holy and without blemish. To be holy is to be saturated and transformed with Christ, and to be without blemish is to be spotless and without wrinkle, with nothing of the natural life of our old man.

With Power
In Ephesians 3:16 we are strengthened also with power. This power is the power that is referred to in Eph. 1:19-22 and that raised Christ from the dead, seated Christ at the right hand of God in the heavenlies, subjected all things under Christ’s feet, and gave Christ to be Head over all things to the church. Such power operates in us (3:20), and with such power God strengthens us for the church.

Christ making His home deep down in our heart
The expression make His home in Eph 3:17 is a translation of the Greek word katoikeo, which means to settle down in a dwelling, or to make a dwelling place. The prefix of this word, kata, means “down.” This indicates that Christ desires to make His home downward in our heart. Christ is not only in us (Col. 1:27); He is also making His home deep down in our heart.

Church will be one spirit with Christ
The church that comes out of Christ will go back to Christ, just as Eve came out of Adam and went back to Adam. As Eve became one flesh with Adam, so the church which goes back to Christ will be one spirit with Christ.

Strengthened into our spirit
Ephesians 3:14-16 records Paul’s prayer to the Father for the believers in Ephesus: “He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit into the inner man.” The apostle’s prayer in 1:15-23 is that the saints would receive revelation concerning the church. Here in 3:14-21 his prayer is that the saints would experience Christ for the church. This requires us to be strengthened into our spirit.

The Spirit is the essence and substance of the Body of Christ
The Spirit is the essence and substance of the Body. Therefore, the church as the Body of Christ must be essentially and substantially the Spirit Himself. If there is no Spirit, there is no Body; apart from the Spirit, all we have is a human congregation. Without the Spirit, there is no substance of the church; without the Spirit, the church is merely a social organization. The church must be one Body with the Spirit as its substance.

Outward transgression and the inward self
In enjoying God [we need] to trust in the blood and the death of the cross. The blood deals with our sins, and the death of the cross deals with our person. When we come to God, exercise our spirit, and learn to cooperate and be mingled with Him, we will discover that we have two problems. We have the problem of sins outwardly and the problem of our person inwardly. There is the outward transgression and the inward self, the outward mistakes and the inward old creation.

These things are an example to us
In 1 Corinthians 9 the apostle Paul compares the Christian life to a race. At the end of this race a prize awaits the winner. Chapter 10 follows immediately concerning the history of the children of Israel. According to Paul’s concept, the whole nation of Israel was in the wilderness running the race. They all passed through the Red Sea; they all ate the same food; they all drank the same spiritual drink. But not all of them entered into the good land; many of them died in the wilderness. First Corinthians 10:11 says that “these things happened to them as an example.”
